Since it is a popular destination for many Finnish people, I thought it might be a good place to take a moment to relax for a weekend getaway. It only takes about 2,5 hours to get from Helsinki to Tallinn City. During our visit in April 2025, we had the joy of experiencing a mix of cold weather and beautiful sunshine, with temperatures varying between -3°C and +15°C.

Key landmarks include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Toompea Castle (a pink castle), which is located near Kuberneri (Governor’s) Garden. The well-preserved city walls and defense towers offer a glimpse into the city’s strategic importance during the Hanseatic era.
- Kadriorg Palace: Built by Peter the Great in the early 18th century, Kadriorg Palace and its surrounding park showcase the city’s royal history and provide a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.

- Telliskivi Creative City: This vibrant area is known for its art galleries, trendy cafes, and creative spaces, reflecting Tallinn’s modern spirit. Located next to the train station in Tallinn City. We visited this place for the first time and we loved it. We wll deffinitely revisit it at some point. The best time to visit is probably during summer.
- Balti Jaam Market: This market is a bustling hub with nearly 300 traders spread across three floors. It offers a diverse range of goods, from fresh produce and street food to antiques and Estonian design. The market’s modern design and variety of stalls make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The best time to visit is all year round since it is partly outdoors and indoors. Loved the food and the interesting relaxed vibe of the market.
- Kalamaja District: Famous for its colorful wooden houses and hipster vibe, Kalamaja is a must-visit for those seeking a unique blend of old and new. We did not visit this area this time, but maybe we will during the upcoming summer.
Hidden gems
- Rotermanni Quarter: With its unique architecture and bustling markets, Rotermanni Quarter offers a modern twist to Tallinn’s historical charm. Located in the heart of the city, it’s a true gem with international stores and vibrant cafes.
- Estonian Open Air Museum: This museum provides a glimpse into traditional Estonian life, making it a perfect spot for history enthusiasts. It’s located a bit outside the Tallin City center so you will need to take the public transportation or use car-ride services like Bolt.
- Rocca Al Mare (shopping center): With over 170 stores, this shopping center offers a diverse range of options, from high-end fashion brands to unique local boutiques. Located just a short drive from Tallinn city center, Rocca al Mare is easily accessible by car, ride-hailing services like Bolt (approximately 7e one way), or public transport (bus trip costs 2e one way per person). Practical Tips
- Getting Around: Navigating Tallinn City is easy with its efficient public transport and walkable streets. Consider using trams and buses to explore different parts of the city. You can pay for the public transportation by entering the buss or tram from the drivers door and pay with your debit or credit card (or Google Pay/ Apple Pay) by the machine. It only costs 2 euros and your ticket is valid for 1 hours. You can read more about it here. Another affordable way of transport is to use Bolt. It worked as easy as the public transportation and all you need is to use the Bolt app.
- Cuisine in Tallinn City: Try the local black rye bread (it’s healthy), eat at modern restaurants and chill in the various café’s the city has to offer. I will be writing about some fantastic places you should visit in Tallinn in my future posts.
- Local Etiquette: Estonians value their quiet culture (like Finnish people do). Be mindful of noise levels, especially in public places and residential areas.
- Reusable Bags: Bring reusable bags for shopping. Many stores in Tallinn charge for plastic bags, so having your own can save you money and help the environment.
