London Public Transportation
Navigating the city is quite easy with the extensive and efficient tube system. Not to mention the iconic red double-decker buses and the river buses. We only used the tube and the double-deckers during our visit to London public transportation. We found that it was enough to meet our needs and got us everywhere we needed to go. When you visit London, don’t forget to experience a classic red double-decker bus ride! It’s a quintessential part of the London public transportation experience and offers a unique perspective of the city’s vibrant streets.
The buses in London are modern and had plenty of places to sit the times we traveled on them. It is a cheap way to experience the city like a local. London public transportation offers some bus routes where you can see the same sights as a hop-on-hop-off bus, saving you £30 or more in the process. Buses 26 and 148 are good choices.
The London Underground
The thing that suprised me a bit when entering the tube for the very first time was that it mght be difficult for a tall person to stand there. It is a challenge because the ceilings are quite low, making it difficult to stand comfortably. But most times we managed to get a place to sit. During rush hours you have to be prepared to stand and popular stations can be packed with a lot of people, so we tried to avoid rush hours.
Using pay as you go (contactless payment = debit/ credit card) is the way to use the London public transportation. It was super convenient and easy to use. Based on my observation most people used this method during our visit. Also, it is more enviromentaly friendly when you don’t buy a separate ticket when using the London public transportation.
There’s a daily cap, so you don’t need to worry about whether to buy a day ticket or a single ticket. I’ll go into detail on that, but first, let’s talk about contactless payment. If you have Apple Pay or Google Pay, you can use that, so you don’t even have to take out your wallet and credit card to pay for the fare.
It’s also completely possible and safe to use your credit card at the gates. Just remember to hold on to it and store it safely in your wallet after you get through the gate. However, don’t use your iPhone at one gate and your Apple Watch at another. Always use the same payment method and device when traveling during the day.
When you choose to pay as you go (or better said contactless payment) method, you need to remember to use the same payment method and device every single time you check-in at the gate (when entering the station) and when checking-out at the gate (when leaving the station). This is the only way to utilize the daily cap, as the system recognizes your card. We never had a problem with this and everything worked just right during our one-week visit and daily trips with the London public transportation.
Examples of single ticket fares when taking the underground:
Zone 1
- Peak: £2.80 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.
- Off Peak: £2.70 At all other times including public holidays.
Zone 1 – 2 (e.g. Aldgate station – Stratford station = Westfield shopping mall, located in zone 2/3)
- Peak: £3.40 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.
- Off Peak: £2.80 At all other times including public holidays.
Zones 1-2 (daily/ weekly cap):
- Daily maximum cap £8,50.
- Weekly (Monday – Sunday) maximum cap £42,70
When traveling on London public transportation to zones 2/3, the daily cap will be calculated based on zones 1-2, if you have only traveled in zones 1 and 2. There aren’t many areas that are located in a double zone, but Westfield shopping mall is one of those areas. The Westfield shopping mall is really big, and I recommend you visit it if you have the time.
London Bus & Tram
Ah, the iconic London red double-decker bus! When using a London double-decker bus, it currently costs less than £2 per fare. The daily cap for bus travel on London public transportation is cheaper than with the underground, but the caps cannot be combined. For 2025, the daily cap for an adult is £5.25.
We used the bus a few times, but found them to be a bit unreliable and slower than the London Underground. There were times when the bus would just stand in traffic for a long time and sometimes it was standing at a bus stop for a long time without an apparent reason even though it was on time. London public transportation can be a mixed bag, but it was fun to test it a couple of times.
